St. Luke’s Students See To Kill a Mockingbird on Bway

V. Parker
From Upper School English Teacher Ross James:

On February 6, St. Luke’s entire junior grade and Mr. Peck’s acting classes attended the much talked about stage production of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Written by Aaron Sorkin and starring Jeff Daniels as Atticus Finch, this stage rendition has been acclaimed for its fresh take on the beloved classic.

Students and faculty alike reacted with powerful reviews of everything from the masterful set design to the character variations of Atticus and Calpurnia, and the significance of the story’s exposure of injustice and its compelling messaging was felt by many. One student remarked: “It was an eye opening play that highlighted problems that are still relevant today.” Another commented on how “the play exposed unjust behavior,” adding it “made me rethink my prejudices and biases.”

As part of the junior year’s ongoing study of American Literature, teachers and students will revisit this text together in follow-up class discussions that will also be tethered to their upcoming reading of Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied Sing, winner of the 2017 National Book Award.
