Girls Varsity Basketball Advances To FAA Final

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Basketball team advanced to its fourth straight FAA tournament final after a dominant second-half display to beat Hamden Hall 53-40 on Thursday, February 21.

The Storm mounted an exceptional comeback after being down 5-20 early in the first half. The home team struggled to get its offense going until a late run in the first half saw them claw their way back to within two points. However, the Hornets made another burst before the break to take a 25-34 lead into the interval.

St. Luke’s used the 10-minute intermission to great effect and held the Hornets to just six points the entire second half. Tamia Fulton ‘19 and Sydney Cummings ‘19 were outstanding on the defensive end for the Storm and instrumental to the turnaround.

Janelle Johnson ‘20 was top-scorer for St. Luke’s with 18 points. Caroline Lau ‘22 added 13, and Summer Klein ‘20 chipped in with seven points.

Head Coach Matt Ward knew this was going to be a difficult matchup as the two teams had met earlier in the season with the Storm edging a tight contest 59-51. “We knew they would make us work for this. They are a talented team and well coached. They always play hard.”

The Storm now faces #2 seed Sacred Heart in the championship game scheduled for Saturday, February, 23, at 4:00pm inside Carey Gymnasium. Ward is expecting another intense battle despite St. Luke’s beating the Tigers 73-50 in the regular season: “Sacred Heart is a very good team and they are in contention to make the Class A NEPSAC tournament this year for a reason. They play hard and rebound extremely well. Ayo Hart is a terrific coach. We need to be ready, and I am confident we will be.”
