SLS PA: 7th Annual Book Chat Draws Record Numbers

mn
Last week, close to 60 parents and faculty attended the St. Luke’s Parents’ Association’s 7th Annual Book Chat, featuring a delicious dinner and a lively, literary discussion of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. The Fireplace Commons was transformed into a 19th century sitting room in Norway, decorated for Christmas – complete with a doll’s house! Guests enjoyed a fresh green salad with a light vinaigrette and a slice of grilled salmon, followed by a selection of meatballs, tri-color carrots, green beans and a hasselback potato. Dessert was a dollop of Chantilly cream with fresh berries and a shard of Norwegian krumkake pastry, along with plates of delicious chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons. The beautifully decorated tables set the scene for the discussion to come. Literature truly came to life!

After dinner, guests were treated to an illuminating conversation led by English teacher, Susan Doran, and History teacher, Hunter Martin. Their presentation of A Doll’s House touched on Henrik Ibsen’s background, the social context of the times, character development, and the underlying themes in this controversial three-act play. Parents took turns reading excerpts from the script, and everyone was engaged in the discussion. It was a wonderful opportunity to experience a “classroom” setting on the Hilltop.

A special thank you to Susan Doran and Hunter Martin, to all the wonderful parent volunteers, and also to our two dedicated co-chairs, Michele Casey and Shannon Ellis. You gave us a night to remember and one of the best events of the year!

If you weren’t able to attend the Book Chat, please stay tuned to the St. Luke’s Parents’ Association news for information on other exciting events coming your way this spring. We look forward to welcoming you next time!
