Winter Storm Review

Daniel Clarke
It was another exciting winter for our athletic teams, with a number of highlights across all sports.

Girls Varsity Basketball added another FAA double to its collection, winning the regular season title and the conference tournament championship, for the fourth consecutive year. The Storm narrowly missed out on a place in the New England Class B final after a tough loss in the semifinal against Groton School, MA.

The team finished the season 9-0 in the FAA and 24-3-0 overall. Janelle Johnson ‘20 scored her 1000th career point in the penultimate game of the season against Cheshire Academy.

Boys Varsity Basketball also enjoyed another impressive campaign on the court. The Storm was crowned FAA regular season co-champions with Hamden Hall. The team missed out on completing the double after a heartbreaking loss to the Hornets in double overtime of the championship game.

The Storm finished 13-1 in FAA play and 17-8 overall for the season.

Varsity Hockey finished 4-5-1 in FAA play to book its place in the postseason tournament as the #4 seed. St. Luke’s had a thrilling semi-final matchup against #1 seed Rye Country Day School, coming from 1-5 down to tie things up at 5-5. Unfortunately for the puck squad, the Wildcats scored with 19 seconds remaining in the game to advance to the championship game.

Senior Captain CJ Woodberry scored a remarkable 27 goals and provided 29 assists for the team. Captain Jack Neafsey ‘19 scored 11 goals for the Storm, despite missing some key games due to a shoulder injury, and Lars Ernberg ‘20 scored 13 goals with 16 assists.

Boys Varsity Squash had one of its youngest squads ever with captains Liam Patty ‘21 and Jack Conti ‘21, along with newcomer James Kontulis ‘21, providing the experience on the team.

The Storm enjoyed team wins against Staples High School, Friends Academy (NY), and Park School (MD). They also had individual success at the New England tournament where Kontulis won his bracket and Patty and Conti finished as runners-up.

Girls Varsity Squash had an excellent campaign, finishing third in the FAA with an overall season record of 9-5.

Caroline Pellegrino ‘21 played in the #1 position for the Storm and finished the season with an impressive 7-2 record. Younger sister Claire Pellegrino ‘24 was outstanding in her first year with the team. Claire finished with a record of 9-1 and competed in the #2 position.

The Varsity Ski team battled some tough conditions all season but competed well in all of its five races. Phoebe Kurth ‘20 excelled for the Storm, finishing second, third, third, and fifth in her four races. Qualifying for Team CT, Kurth will compete against 12 other states at the Eastern State Ski Championships at Attitash Mountain Ski Area, Bartlett, N.H., between March 7-10, 2019.
