St. Luke's Girls Varsity Tennis: Season Preview

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Tennis team has been preparing for another season and is looking to defend its NEPSAC title for a fourth straight year.

Head Coaches Brinley Ehlers and Tish Tregallas both return to guide a team that has the majority of its players back from last year. The 2019 squad has a wealth of experience with seven seniors on the roster, as well as a number of other talented tennis players.

Ehlers has been extremely pleased with how pre-season has been going and believes she has the depth of squad to compete in both the FAA and New England Championships this year: “Our preseason has been excellent. We had a very competitive tryout process, which resulted in us adding four strong players. We then made the trip to Disney and had a lot of fun down there. We were fortunate to play at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) national training center and spend some time with the professional coaches there. That was hugely beneficial as we had lots of skill development.”

Ehlers knows seniors Hannah Amendola ‘19 and Grace Fitzgibbons ‘19 will do an outstanding job captaining the team this spring: “Hannah and Grace have both been with us since they were in 8th grade and know what the program is all about. They have already shown really great leadership, and I expect them to continue that throughout the season and help the team meet its goals.”

Cierra Kitt ‘19, Maddie Harris ‘19, Tyleigh Zammit ‘19, Caroline Warneryd ‘19, Georgia Rosenberg ‘19, Mia Mitchell ‘20, Sadie Vehslage ‘20, and Amelie Warneryd ‘20 all return for the Storm. New to the team this season are Audrey Magnussen ‘21, Amelia Heffern ‘21, Caroline Pellegrino ‘21, and Hannah Dekker ‘23. Ehlers believes the depth within the group will be key to the success of the team: “We have a lot of talent in the squad and look forward to competing in the FAA this season. We have won the NEPSAC tournament three years in a row so another of our goals is to defend that title. I am excited to see what this group can achieve.”

The NEPSAC tournament is by invitation only so Ehlers knows the importance of the regular season matches and expects the team to be competitive in every single one: “We want to compete in every match. We know the FAA is extremely strong and a very difficult league to play in, but we have the ability to compete with the best.”

St. Luke’s Girls Tennis opened up the season with a tough 3-4 loss at Greens Farms Academy on Thursday, April 4.

Next Up: GVT hit the road again on Wednesday, April 10, when the team travels to Christian Heritage.
