St. Luke's Varsity Baseball: Season Preview

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Varsity Baseball team welcomes back the majority of last year’s squad for the 2019 season and hopes the consistency in its roster will pay dividends.

Returning for his fifth year, Head Coach Anthony Conte has been extremely pleased with the preseason preparations: “Our preseason has been great. Our numbers are higher than expected and our guys were clearly working this offseason.  We have had great buy-in from day one and hit the ground running.”

The team traveled to Florida in March to enjoy some warmer weather, and Conte was impressed with the team’s work ethic throughout: “The Disney trip was immensely beneficial to our preparation. Even though we are blessed with the turf field at St. Luke’s, practicing against ourselves in 30-degree weather is not ideal for baseball.  It was fantastic to stretch it out in Florida’s beautiful weather and play three scrimmages, as well as a JV game.”

This year’s squad is captained by Oz Jensen ‘19, Nolan O’Brien ‘19, and Mac Lemkau ‘20. Conte has seen great leadership from all three and believes they will be a uniting factor during the course of the season: “Having three guys who we have built a relationship during the last four years is key. Their different personalities and strengths will help them to connect to a wide range of our players. This is a huge benefit to the team and the coaching staff. I believe they will continue to do a fantastic job over the course of the season.”

Conte looks to create an environment where St. Luke’s baseball competes every single day and believes he has the depth in his squad to ensure that happens: “I am looking for our guys to compete in every situation and be fun to watch. Our mindset is to go hard, leave it all out on the field, and learn from every outcome. I believe we have more depth this year, with almost every starter returning.  We have a team-first mentality, which will be essential for our continued success.”

The St. Luke’s Varsity Baseball team opened the season with a 5-9 loss to Millbrook on Saturday, March 30, before another tough defeat to Rye Country Day School on Tuesday, April 2.

The Storm took another tough loss to The Harvey School on Wednesday, April 3, but will hope to bounce back against King School on Saturday, April 6.
