Boys Tennis Starts Season in Fine Form

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Tennis team looks to build on its strong 2018 season with many of the squad returning this year to represent the Storm.

Head Coach Stephen Vehslage also returns and is very excited about the additions to this year’s team and its prospects going forward. Several players were able to work with the professional coaching staff at the US Tennis Association training center in Orlando during the March break in preparation for the Spring season.

The Storm began with two very competitive scrimmages against New Canaan High and Weston High before the home opener against Canterbury School on Saturday, April 6. St. Luke’s made light work of the Saints in a 7-0 win.

The team captains this year are Max Lehnert ‘19, Brian Peck ‘19, and Rutger Zenner ‘20, and Vehslage is confident the trio will provide excellent leadership both on and off the court.

Jack Truwit ‘20 and Teddy Truwit '22 will pack a big one-two punch at the top of the Storm lineup, and Vehslage is looking for the highly-ranked pair to win a lot of matches this year.

Zack Amendola ‘20, James Adamini ‘21, Lucas Manocherian ‘20, Jack Briggs ‘21, Curtis Camp ‘19, and Danny Mezei ‘21 all return and have clearly strengthened their games during the off-season. Another new addition to the team is Adam Rizvi ‘21, who brings additional depth to the team and is already making an impact.

Vehslage said: "I'm excited about the season, especially given the strength of our team this year. Our returning players have improved since last spring, Jack is healthy and playing well, and Teddy and Adam are great additions to the roster.  We're solid throughout the lineup, and I think we can give anyone in our league a serious run for their money."

The team lost narrowly to Brunswick on Wednesday, April 10, and recorded another 7-0 victory against Hamden Hall on Saturday, April 13.

The Storm lost another close match against Greens Farms Academy on Wednesday, April 17. The team is back on the court at Rye Country Day School on Thursday, April 18 at 4:15pm.
