Girls Lax Looking To Make FAA Push

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Lacrosse has started the 2019 season in fine form, recording wins against Hopkins on Saturday, April 6, and the Harvey School on Monday, April 8.

A group from the team traveled to Disney for preseason training during the  March break, and Head Coach Caitlin Copelan believes that time in Florida had a very positive impact: “We had a great trip and got a lot done. We were able to see what we needed to work on, as well as implement some offensive options before the season started.”

The Storm is captained by Olivia Schwartz ‘19, Katie Libman ‘19, and Kirsten Pastore ‘19, and Copelan is confident their leadership skills will benefit the group. “We're really looking for the captains to take charge and make sure the culture we are trying to develop starts with them. We have put a lot of responsibility on our captains this year in terms of them showing initiative,  pacing the practice, and holding themselves and teammates accountable. They have been stepping up big and are very communicative during practices and games.”

St. Luke’s lost a tough opening match against Greens Farms Academy on Wednesday, April 3, before storming back against the Hilltoppers and the Cavaliers. They travel to Hamden Hall on Wednesday, April 17, before hosting Rye Country Day School on Thursday, April 18.  Copelan is hoping the team continues to play with confidence: “We want the girls to play hard, tough, and with an edge, which is what we’ve been focusing on, especially defensively.”

On the offensive side, the Storm is looking for Schwartz and Ryan Weil '21 to continue where they left off last year. The offense has also added freshman pair Macy Owsley and Annalise Correia: “Olivia and Ryan turned some heads last spring, and we need that same output from them again this year. Annalise is emerging as a big threat and leader on the field, and Macy is super dynamic and an excellent addition in the midfield.”

Copelan, in her second year, hopes to continue the development process and make a push for the FAA tournament: “We are already much better as a team and program this year as the girls know exactly what is expected of them; they are more comfortable with the drills and plays we are running. We need to stay confident and control the things we can– especially our effort and execution. If we do that, I expect the team  to make a push in the FAA.”
