Award-Winning Cartoonist Visits St. Luke’s

VGP
From Middle School Librarian Jean Myles:

On April 30, St. Luke’s Middle School welcomed award-winning author and illustrator Jerry Craft. His newest graphic novel, New Kid, is the story of 7th grader Jordan Banks, who attends a prestigious private school known for its academics, instead of the art school of his dreams. He also finds himself torn between the two very different worlds of home and school. New Kid is the recipient of several awards and was recently reviewed in The New York Times.

Craft spoke to the students about his writing process and drawing methods. He shared stories about his path to becoming a writer and illustrator and talked about the adversity he faced from the publishing industry. After receiving rejections over and over again, he took a chance with self-publishing. Jerry shared how mentors and peers in the writing community have been, and continue to be, a great inspiration and support.

Some of the Middle School art classes had the opportunity to experience small group tutorials. Students also had the chance to get their books autographed by Craft.

Thanks to the Center for Leadership, Director of Global Education Beth Yavenditti and Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations Julia Gabriele for helping to make this visit happen.
