Varsity Baseball Shuts Out GFA For Key Win

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Varsity Baseball team produced an outstanding performance on Monday, May 6, to record a shutout victory against Greens Farms Academy.

The Storm scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning when Everett Andersen ‘22 made it home as GFA threw the ball to second base in an attempt to catch Teddy Cashman ‘22 stealing.

Michael Hage ‘19 earned the win for St. Luke’s as he allowed just four hits over his two and two-thirds innings. Oz Jensen ‘19 also had a strong showing out of the bullpen, pitching three and a third innings, striking out seven.

Jack Ellis ‘21 then earned a remarkable save for the Storm as he came to mound in the final inning to record the last three Dragon outs. GFA had the bases loaded with no outs when Ellis came in during the 7th inning.  The first out came on a ground ball to Andersen at third, which he turned into a forced out at home. Ellis then induced another ground ball straight back to him, which he threw to Joel Strand ‘23 at home plate. Strand completed the 1-2-3 double play to finish the game in dramatic fashion.

It has been a challenging season for the Storm but Head Coach Anthony Conte was extremely proud of his team after yesterday’s game: “I am very proud of our guys who played hard to earn this win. They continue to show up and work for each other, every day, and that’s all we can ask of them.”

St. Luke’s Varsity Baseball completes its regular season schedule on Saturday, May 11, with a home contest vs. The MacDuffie School. The Storm then travels to Brunswick School on Monday, May 13 for the first round of the FAA playoffs.
