St. Luke’s Parents of Alumni Reconnect Over New York Culture

S. Veneruso
From Hetty Nerod P '17:

The St. Luke's Alumni Parent Board, led by Joyce Andersen (P '15, '16, '17, '21, '22), Ulla Bretschneider (P '13, '14), Tracey Hamill (P '11, '13, '16), and Frances Wilson (P '13, '16, '18), plans various events throughout the year to keep St. Luke's parents connected with the school and one another after their children graduate.

On October 18th, 2018, 12 parents of alumni gathered in the forecourt outside of Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate in the Hudson River Valley. Kykuit, derived from the Dutch word for "lookout," sits high above the Hudson River and was the home for 4 generations of Rockefellers beginning with John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil. The three-hour tour included the house, art galleries, extensive gardens, and the Coach Barns and allowed plenty of time for the parents to meet or reconnect. Afterwards, the group gathered at the Red Hat for a delicious warm lunch along the Hudson with views of New York City and the Tappan Zee Bridge.

In attendance were: Joyce Andersen (P '15, '16, '17, '21, '22), Ulla Bretschneider (P '13, '14), Sandra Comas (former faculty member and P '14), Kerrie Florio (P '15), Myra Gelband (P '10, '10), Sharon Libman (P '15, '17, '19), MaryHelen Morris (P '13), Hetty Nerod (P '17), Denise Sellhausen (P '08, '12), Suzanne Simmonds (P '14, '16), Beth Viergever (P '13, '17), and Frances Wilson (P '13, '16, '18).

On April 18, 2019, a grey spring day, another group of St. Luke's parents of alumni met outside of the Plaza Hotel for a private tour of Central Park. Organizer Ulla Bretshneider (P '13 and '14) planned the outing. Tour guide Garrett Shoreour of Free Tours By Foot walked the group through the geology, development and social history of the park as they explored The Pond, the Dairy, the Carousel, the Mall with its statues of poets, and eventually ending in Strawberry Fields. The adventure was capped off with a lunch at Tavern on the Green.

Exploring the park were: Joyce Andersen (P '15, '16, '17, '21, '22), Ulla Bretschneider (P '13, '14), Stephanie Cullinane (P '09, '11, '14), Natalia Gerasimoff (P '13), Hetty Nerod (P '17), Ellen Powis (P '14) Beth Viergever (P '13, '17), and Frances Wilson (P '13, '16, '18).

Other events include the Alumni and Parents of Alumni Reception at Homecoming, the Parents of Alumni Breakfast, class-specific book clubs, and more.
