Homecoming 2019 Recap

Stefanie Veneruso
St. Luke’s celebrated another successful Homecoming and Reunion Weekend on October 11-12, 2019.

The weekend began with the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction on Friday evening. The St. Luke's Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2011 to honor the athletes, teams, coaches, and supporters who went above and beyond in bringing recognition, honor, and distinction to the School through their outstanding achievements in the field of athletics.

Thomas Riordan '50 (football, hockey, baseball), Troy Haynie '85 (football, hockey, baseball), Rachel Brittenham '09 (soccer, basketball, softball), and Chris Hanson '09 (squash) made up the 7th Hall of Fame induction class. Alumni, faculty and staff, students, family and friends gathered to celebrate the achievements of these four athletes.

Members of the Hall of Fame Committee who worked hard to make the evening a success include Director of Athletics Mike West, Science Teacher and coach David Havens, Upper School Health and Wellness Coordinator and coach Camille DeMarco Havens, Math Teacher and coach Brinley Ehlers, Physical Education Teacher and coach Pat Raffaele '88, Ed LaBella '76, Anthony Bonnanzio '81, Peter Hanson '57, and Henry Parmalee '94.

Homecoming Day, Saturday, October 12, was sunny and filled with athletic contests, student activity booths, and family, friends, and fans, as well as alumni who returned to their home on the Hilltop.

Susan Bralower, Middle School Science Chair, hosted yet another successful Middle School Mystery Box Challenge. The theme this year was Ping Pong Ball Racers: How Fast Can You Go? Each of the 21 teams (made up of 70 students) had 45 minutes to prototype, test, and modify their designs to create a racecar that could be hooked to a zip line to carry a ping pong ball. Congratulations to the winning team, 5th graders Addie O'Reilly, Ellie Briggs, and Cara Sato-Connell, who had the fastest car!

Jeff Kress, Math Teacher, Dan Mecca '81, and Peter Bush Swanberg '73 reported Live from the Hilltop on St. Luke’s radio station, WSLX, for the majority of the day, allowing alumni near and far to feel connected and part of the action.

Four members of the Class of 1969 returned for their 50th Reunion brunch: Paul Bassler, Phil Griffin, John Lee, and Ed Sanson. Special guests included Head of School Mark Davis, Associate Head of School Julia Gabriele, PA President and member of the Alumni Association Board Karen Stamoulis '89, Board Chair James Andersen, Headmaster Emeritus Dick Whitcomb, former faculty member Guy Bailey (whose first year teaching at SLS was '68-'69), and 50th Reunion Liaison Beth Garrabrant.

The day culminated with the Alumni & Parents of Alumni Reception, hosted by the Alumni Parent Board (Joyce Andersen, Ulla Bretschneider, Tracey Hamill, Sharon Libman, and Frances Wilson), the Class of 2014 5th Reunion, and the Upper School Homecoming Dance.

Thank you to our many alumni, parent, and student volunteers, athletes, coaches, fans, and alumni who all came together to make this weekend a success!
