GVS Wins FAA Championship

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Soccer team beat Greenwich Academy 2-1 on Friday, November 8, to clinch the FAA Tournament Championship.

The Storm won the regular-season title in 2015, 2016, and 2018, but the tournament championship has eluded them since 2011.

GVS had a blistering start to the game, scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes to stun the Gators. After nine minutes, senior captain Lea Panagiotidis scored the first goal, turning in a corner kick from fellow captain Juia Lombardo ‘21.

St. Luke’s kept the pressure on, and it was rewarded five minutes later. Ali Gall ‘22 found some space just outside the box and blasted a shot high into the GA goal to make it 20.

The Gators responded, scoring their only goal of the game from a corner kick, with 22:29 to play in the first half.

St. Luke’s could have added to its lead before the break, as the home team continued to dominate the game.

The second half was an extremely tight matchup, as both teams battled for the title. The Gators came close to tying up the game just seven minutes into the second period, hitting the post from another set-piece. However, St. Luke’s held on for the victory.

Head Coach Dan Clarke was ecstatic after the win: “I am so proud of this team and the effort they put in. We started so well and could have been three or four goals up by half time. The second half, we had to defend for our lives and rode our luck a little, but the team dug deep and found a way to win. It’s been a long, long time since we won the tournament, and that’s a credit to this group of players.”
