Modern Technology & Ancient Artifacts

VGP
From Upper School history teachers Abby Abbott and Michael Powell:

In conjunction with the DesignLab, Academic Technologists, and Art Department, St. Luke’s 9th grade Ancient History students were asked to answer the following driving question: How can we use an exhibition of artifacts to describe themes in Ancient Egypt?

To answer this question, students worked in groups to identify a cultural throughline that informed their selection of three artifacts. Using a 3D printer, students produced 'stand-in' artifacts linked to a QR code with an image of the object in their mini-museum. By using a version of augmented reality, students leveraged modern technology to transport the viewer 5,000 years into the past. Powerful women, warfare, sport, burial practices, animals, and magic captivated students' interest and can be seen throughout the gallery space.

The Ancient Egypt Mini-Museum exhibit can be seen in the Class of 2019 Art Gallery in the Jensen Family Humanities Wing through Friday, December 6.
