Middle School Debaters Bring Home Golden Gavel Pin

V. Parker
St. Luke’s MS Debate Club returned home from the recent Connecticut Middle School Debate Association’s first tournament of the season with several wins and the coveted Golden Gavel pin.
Almost 250 debaters from twenty-two Connecticut schools came together at Smith Middle School in Glastonbury to debate the motion This House regrets the worldwide proliferation of surveillance cameras. St. Luke’s was represented by two novice teams.

St. Luke’s Debate Coach Meredith MacLeod shared, “The team of Ainsley Birmingham, Samantha Gerber, and Eloise Pakman won all three rounds and were awarded the Golden Gavel pin. The team of Chris Briggs, Sally Picon, and Ella Sato-Connell won two rounds and debated valiantly during their third one.”

The next Middle School debate tournament will take place at Middlebrook Middle School in Wilton on January 25.

St. Luke’s Debate Club meets every Tuesday from 7:45-8:30am for debate lessons and games. St. Luke's Upper School Varsity Debate Team meets after school.
