St. Luke's Ski Team: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Ski team has a very youthful look to it this year, with a number of eighth-graders joining the program and skiing for the Storm for the first time.

Head Coach Chris Phelps returns with veteran skiers Phoebe Kurth ‘20, Harper Boege ‘20, Eddie Boris ‘21, and Calvin Stuart ‘22. Phelps has been impressed with the work ethic of his team: “Preseason has been a mix of really short, high-intensity workouts, with some longer endurance exercises mixed in. We have also worked a lot on balance and coordination, as well as stretching in our yoga sessions. The group has been working extremely hard, which is great.”

Phelps is thrilled with team captains Kurth and Harper Boege, “They have really stepped up and helped the younger kids settle in. Their leadership on and off the dryland has been phenomenal from the get-go. They are very active and work hard to  push the team forward.”

Kurth hopes to enjoy another memorable season and make the state team for the fourth year in a row. The New Canaan resident finished in the top five in each of her four races last year and has been working hard in the offseason: “Phoebe has been dominant the last few years. She pushes herself and is working extremely hard to improve her form. I’m excited to see her on the mountain again and what she can achieve this season. She is fun to watch.”

New to the team this season are Bryan Douglas ‘21, JB Barr ‘22, Asa Fleischer ‘24, Ohm Shrikam ‘24, Evelyn Boris ‘23, Pearse Connell ‘24, Anabelle Kremens ‘24, McLain Boege ‘24, and Temma Wagner ‘24. Phelps is excited to see what they will add to the squad: “I look forward to seeing the new members of our team on the mountain. We have great athletes in the group, so the first two races will tell us a lot. I want all of them to have a positive experience and keep the spirit of this program alive.”

Phelps is thrilled to welcome back assistant coaches Brinely Ehlers and Carrie Meatto: “Brinley is a tremendous support to the team and me. She is willing to do whatever we need. Carrie will be our home-base coach here at school and is an invaluable member of the team.”

The St. Luke’s Ski Team has its first race of the season on Wednesday, January 8, at Mount Southington at 4:30pm.
