Math + Games = Fun Upcoming Event

V. Parker
“What is math, exactly? Ask twenty people and you will probably get twenty different answers. Math is so much more than just dividing really large numbers and taking square roots. It can be an act of creation, a question of logic, or the discovery of patterns. Promoting a positive relationship in math for children can inspire them to learn and experiment and take risks with problem solving. It is a language, and it is everywhere. How does it speak to you?”—Mary Frederick, St. Luke’s Math Chair

St. Luke’s will host its first Middle School Math Family Game Night on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 6:00-8:00pm. At the event, students and parents can engage in math games that will spark the imagination and lead to conversations about how math appears in our daily lives and the world around us. Upper School students and faculty will lead a variety of activities and our in-house chess experts will be on hand to teach skills and run games.

The evening will be geared towards students in 3rd-8th grades, but all in attendance are welcome to participate. The event is being sponsored by the Julie Robinson Math Festival (JRMF). According to its website, the JRMF mission is “an educational organization that sponsors locally organized mathematics festivals targeting K–12 students. The events are designed to introduce students to the richness and beauty of mathematics in a collaborative and non-competitive forum.”
