Girls Basketball Bounce Back Against Cheshire Cats

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Basketball team put in a dominant display at Cheshire Academy on Wednesday, January 22, improving to 10-4 on the season with a 75-37 win.

The Storm bounced back in style following a tough loss to Niagara Prep (Canada) on Saturday, January 18, at the Rose Classic Super Jam in Brooklyn, New York.

St. Luke’s started quickly against the Cats, racing into a 41-18 halftime lead. The visitors continued to control the contest in the second period to secure an important victory against another Class B school.

Caroline Lau ‘22 had another great night, leading the St. Luke’s scoring with 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds and five assists. Janelle Johnson ‘20 chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds, and five steals. Lexi Watson ‘20 added 12 points as well as seven rebounds, and Brielle Renwick ‘23 scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Head Coach Matt Ward was pleased with the response from his team after the defeat to Niagara: “We learned a lot against Niagara. Most importantly, we learned how hard it is to beat a team that is relentless on both ends. We used that and were relentless ourselves against Cheshire Academy. We were focused, competed for 32 minutes, and had a lot of fun. We still have a lot of things to fix, but when our focus and effort is where it needs to be, we are much harder to play against.”

Next up: The Storm hosts Beaver Country Day School on Saturday, January 25, before two road games at Hopkins on Wednesday, January 29, and Hamden Hall on Friday, January 31.
