Kurth Caps Off Stellar Season With Team CT Qualification
St. Luke’s Ski Team Captain Phoebe Kurth ‘20 qualified for the Connecticut Ski Team for the fourth consecutive year, after finishing eighth overall in the Connecticut Shootouts.
Every year, the top ski racers from the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League (CISL) compete in a two-part race to earn a position on Team Connecticut.
The first race is a giant slalom, with the top 30 boys and girls progressing to the slalom race. The top 12 boys and girls from that race earn the opportunity to represent the state team at the Eastern State Ski Championships at Mittersill Race Venue, Franconia, New Hampshire, between March 5-8, 2020.
Kurth finished eighth in the Giant Slalom Event on Monday, Jan. 27, at Mount Southington and followed that up with another eighth-place finish in the slalom race on Monday, Feb. 3.
The New Canaan resident has competed for St. Luke’s since eighth grade and been named on the All-State team in each of her years in high school. Kurth has had another remarkable season finishing in third place three times and fourth once in four races overall.
When asked about her performances this season and her achievement of making the state team for the fourth straight year, Kurth remained humble: “I think a part of my success this year has been my mentality going into races. I have been determined to push myself out of the gate and take tighter lines which has resulted in faster times. Qualifying for Team Connecticut again is a real honor and I am excited for the opportunity to represent the team for the fourth time.”
The four-day event consists of training days on Thursday, March 5, and Friday, March 6, a giant slalom race on Saturday, March 7, and a slalom race on March 9. Team Connecticut will compete against 12 states, including Maine, New Hampshire and Wisconsin.
