Girls Basketball Clinches Fifth Straight FAA Title

Daniel Clarke
St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Basketball clinched its fifth consecutive FAA regular season title on Wednesday, Feb. 12, with a 71-67 win at Rye Country Day School.

The Wildcats came out strong and raced into a 6-20 lead during the first period. The home team continued to apply the pressure, and the Storm found themselves in a 26-44 hole at halftime.

However, St. Luke’s had a huge third quarter, when they outscored the Wildcats 26-7, giving the Storm the lead as they headed into the fourth quarter. In an intense final period, the Storm hung on to its lead, despite a spirited effort from Rye.

The comeback was inspired by a group effort, with Caroline Lau ‘22 top-scoring with 16, Sophie Kriftcher ‘20 netted 13, Brielle Renwick ‘23 hit 12, Lexi Watson ‘20 added ‘11, Summer Klein ‘20 scored nine, and Janelle Johnson ‘20 chipped in with eight points.

Head Coach Matt Ward was proud of his team’s reaction in the second half and happy to have defended the title yet again: “I’m happy about how we responded, as I know what we are capable of. I didn’t call one timeout in the first half, as I needed the players to figure out how to respond, and they did that. Winning the regular season championship for a fifth straight year is an incredible achievement. I’m extremely proud of this group of players. I hope they’re proud of themselves too.”

The Storm completed its FAA schedule against the Wildcats, finishing with a perfect 7-0 record. St. Luke’s will be the number one seed for the postseason tournament, which starts on Monday, Feb. 24. GVBB will receive a bye into the semi-final, which will be played at home on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
