Boys Varsity Basketball Beat GFA To Win FAA Regular Season Title

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Basketball team secured the FAA regular season title on Thursday, Feb. 13, with a 70-54 win at Greens Farms Academy.

The Storm went into the contest knowing defeat would open the door for the Dragons to split the league championship. However, a superb second-half performance propelled St. Luke’s to victory and helped the team complete a perfect 12-0 FAA league season.

The Storm fell behind 0-2, before tying the game and then taking the lead for good in the opening minutes of the first half. In an intense but scrappy first period, St. Luke’s couldn’t separate themselves from a determined GFA team and went into the interval leading 25-23.

However, it was a different game after the break, as the Storm was relentless on both sides of the ball. Some sharp shooting from Cole Bryant ‘20, who top-scored with 17 points, Chuck Clemons ‘20, who netted 14, Ethan Crawford ‘23, who added 10, and Lewis Cropper ‘21, who scored eight allowed St. Luke’s to pull away and clinch the title for the second consecutive season.

Head Coach Tony Newsom spoke highly of his players after the game: “I am extremely proud of this team and how we have come together. This was always one of our goals, but we want to accomplish more. We will continue to work hard to prepare for the end of the season and the conference tournament. This group of players is a pleasure to coach, and we don’t want this season to end any time soon.”

St. Luke’s will be seeded #1 for the upcoming FAA Tournament and play the semi-final at home on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 4:30pm (opponent TBD), with a potential championship game on Thursday, Feb. 27, also at 4:30pm.
