St. Luke's Squash Battles at Nationals

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Boys and Girls Varsity Squash Teams had a tremendous experience at the 2020 Head U.S. High School Team Squash Championships, which was held Feb. 21-23, in Hartford, Connecticut.

The boys team was drawn in Division Five of the national event, lost a tough opening match 3-4 against Woodberry Forest School from Virginia. Wins for Liam Patty ‘21, Jack Conti ‘21, and Carter Lightburn ‘25 gave the Storm a 3-1 lead, but a spirited comeback from Woodberry Forest forced St. Luke’s into the consolation bracket.

The Storm was paired against City Squash from the Bronx, New York, in its second match and wins from Cameron Hill ‘21, Angad Sethi ‘24, Peter Cioffi ‘23, and Lightburn were enough to take another close contest 4-3.

Next up for Boys Varsity Squash was a semifinal matchup against University School from Ohio. Kaan Savasoglu picked up his first win of the weekend and Conti his second, but St. Luke’s fell 5-2 overall.

The Storm finished the weekend on a high note, winning its final match 5-2 against Buckingham Brown & Nichols School from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Savasoglu, Sethi, Conti, Cioffi, and Lightburn all played excellent squash to seal the victory and claim 11th place overall.

In the girls event, St. Luke’s was drawn in Division VI and faced Buffalo Seminary from Buffalo, New York. In a very close contest, the Storm edged the match 4-3, with wins from Caroline Pellegrino ‘21, Lizzy Adamsen ‘20, Kathleen Ehlers ‘21, and Audrey Magnusen ‘21.

St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Squash was paired against Ethel Walker School in the semifinal on Saturday, Feb. 22, but, despite victories from Pellegrino, Ryan Weil ‘21, and Adamsen, the Storm fell 3-4 against the Wildcats

In the third-place play-off, the Storm lost another heartbreaker 3-4 against Nardin Academy from Buffalo, New York. Pellegrino and Adamsen made it three from three, and Lucy Ehlers ‘21 picked up her first win of the weekend and ended a fun season for the girls’ team.

The boys will travel to the New England Tournament at Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut, Saturday, Feb. 29–Sunday, March 1.
