St. Luke's Baseball: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Baseball Program is looking to a productive year under new Head Coach Sam Colon and Assistant Coach Stanley Latimer.

Colon comes to St. Luke’s with a wealth of experience as both a player and coach. Colon graduated with a bachelor’s of science in business administration from Concordia College, where he was a four-year starter, all regional, and All-American athlete. As a coach, Colon has been involved in youth baseball in Westchester Country and Fairfield County since 2002 and was the owner of ProSwing Athletic Training Center in Port Chester, a softball and baseball training facility.

He has been impressed with what he has seen during the first few days of preseason: “Week one was great. The group is working extremely hard. I wish I had more time with the guys, who improve every session and really make baseball a priority.”

Colon inherited a program that went 3-14 last year but is confident he and his staff will have an immediate impact: “We want to challenge for both the regular-season title and the tournament title. I am really looking forward to turning things around at both the JV and varsity levels. We will have some fun doing it and make sure we play the game the right way.”

The team is captained by Mack Lemkau ‘20, Evan Panageas ‘21, and Lewis Cropper ‘21. Colon is confident the trio will be great for the team: “My only expectation of the captains is to lead by example in everything they do. I couldn’t be happier with what I have seen so far. I look forward to working with them over the course of the season.”

The Storm is boosted by the return of Ryan Higgins ‘21, who has already committed to play baseball at Duke University, but Colon has been impressed by many of his squad: “Ryan Sherman [‘21]  has really stood out in the first few days. I have been extremely impressed with how well he has been throwing. Overall, the boys look good. I am extremely pleased by how they play with each other.”

St. Luke’s opens up the season with a road game at Brunswick School before hosting King School on Friday, April 3. Colon looks towards everyone playing their part: “I expect all players to contribute once they know their role. That includes the players on the field and the players in the dugout. I want my guys to play hard and hungry, but to enjoy the ride.”
