The Atheltic Department Surprises Senior Athletes
The St. Luke’s Athletic Department, including its spring coaches, honored the 33 seniors who played across our seven spring sports in a new and unique way this week.
Athletic Director Mike West, Associate Director of Athletics Jen Besgen, Assistant Athletic Director Anna Knechtel, and Sports Information Specialist Dan Clarke coordinated multiple Navy-Sealesque, secret drop-off missions to try to surprise our senior group. Some were caught, others were not!
On Monday, May 11, Girls Varsity Tennis and Boys Varsity Tennis celebrated Sadie Vehslage, Amelie Warneryd, Meredith Macey, James Adamini, Jack Truwit, Rutger Zenner, Lucas Manocherian, and Max Mitchell. Each senior received a gift from the athletic department and the traditional senior cutout of themselves. Coaches Brinley Ehlers, Trish Tregellas, and Stephen Vehslage also shared video messages, thanking all their players for their contributions.
A special highlight was a Wilton Police and Fire Department escort, organized by coaches Ehlers and Tregellas, that saw a number of the team drive by the seniors’ houses honking horns and throwing tennis balls into their yards.
On Tuesday, softball and golf were recognized when Raven Sead, Lexi Watson, Summer Klein, Lars Ernberg, Jackson McManus and Henry Selvala had their cutouts delivered. Coaches Joseph and Warner again shared video messages with their respective groups.
Wednesday, May 12, was Girls Lacrosse Senior Day with Phoebe Kurth, Kayleigh Bowler, Quinn Gregorich, Aida Nahas, Victoria Whitcomb, and Abbey O’Meara all honored for their contributions to the program. Coach Kathy Drake created a video message for the group. It was also Baseball Senior Day, aka Mack Lemkau Day, and coach Colon shared some kind words about his only senior.
The festivities wrapped up on Thursday with Boys Varsity Lacrosse, as the 12 seniors were thanked by Head Coach Andy Towers for everything they had given to move the program forward.
Athletic Director Mike West, who spearheaded the coordination of events, was happy all seven sports were able to celebrate the graduating class, even if it wasn’t in the traditional way: “The impact of our spring senior athletes on our program has been profound, and their leadership unquestionable. It was so much fun to find a new and creative way to honor the commitment and character of our spring senior athletes. A special thanks to their parents for sharing in this journey and supporting our program along the way.”
