St. Luke's Jazz Band: Gonna Fly Now

During St. Luke’s at Home, Upper School Band Teacher Peter Valera knew that instrumental music classes would require a new approach. Valera shared, “I wanted the band to have a performance, but Zoom wasn’t the right platform for a live concert. Our student musicians have worked so hard all year, and I was looking for a way to showcase their efforts and talents with our community.”

Seeing other musicians’ works online led to the idea to create our own video. This approach allowed students to experience a new style of performance of playing for a recording instead of a live audience. This required them to really work through their individual parts before their final recording was shared with their teacher. With all the video clips on hand, Valera set to work mixing the audio and editing the video. Many, many hours later, the St. Luke’s Jazz Band’s rendition of the Rocky theme song “Gonna Fly Now” was complete. Huge thanks to our extremely talented and dedicated musicians, Music Department, and Mr. Valera.
