Eighth Grade Engineering Mystery Box Challenge

The eighth grade science classes wrapped up the year with an Engineering Mystery Box Challenge, building bridges made from straws and masking tape.
Since the students didn’t get to finish their bridge-building project, Mark Chuhta and I wanted to end the year with one more hands-on engineering challenge. If they couldn’t come to work on their bridges on campus, then we decided to bring the project to them in a special delivery. We assembled kits, and then a team of eighth grade teachers and advisors hand-delivered an Engineering Mystery Box to every eighth grade student.
The students had several days to design and complete their bridges. On the last day of class, students shared their designs online. Many of the students’ designs were based on the ones that they were working on in school. Everyone agreed it was a great way to end the school year.
