St. Luke’s Chess Player Makes Top 100 List and Takes Classes With Woman Grandmaster

S.A.
Laurel Aronian ‘25, a member of the St. Luke’s Chess Club, was recently named one of the Top 100 for the US Chess Federation’s 13-year-old girl category. The US Chess Federation is on a mission to “empower people, enrich lives, and enhance communities through chess,” with a focus on using chess in education.

This summer, Laurel joined Woman Grandmaster Jennifer Shahade and the US Girls Chess Group for a series of online classes led by female chess champions from around the world. These classes not only taught the skill of the game, but also helped empower young women to take the skills they learn on the board into everyday life: working under pressure, managing gender discrimination and juggling extra-curricular activities with schoolwork.

Laurel was so impressed by what she learned that she wrote about her experience in an article featured on the US Chess Federation website.

“The classes have been an amazing experience, and I hope to see even more girls joining the group in the future,” said Laurel Aronian.

If you’re interested in learning about the game or practicing your skill, St. Luke’s is inviting student or faculty chess enthusiasts of all skill levels to join in the online chess club.
