Fall Sports See Superb Participation

Daniel Clarke
St. Luke’s participation rate for fall sports has been extremely positive, despite the challenges faced due to COVID-19.

Compared to last fall, the Storm has seen an overall increase in the number of athletes taking part in preseason. The impressive turnout, which represents 55% of the student population, comes even though there is no requirement this fall for students to fulfill a co-curricular activity.

There have been over 200 athletes taking to the fields and courts, maximizing the use of the school’s excellent athletic facilities.

St. Luke’s was one of the first school’s in the region to move its volleyball program outside to help reduce the risk to players. During the first week of preseason, the volleyball and field hockey teams shared the Class of 2018 field before an area of the tennis courts was transformed into two outdoor volleyball courts.

St. Luke’s Athletics Director Mike West is thrilled to see so many student-athletes working hard to improve at their chosen sport: “Building community through athletics is one of the most critical things we can do this fall as we gather on the Hilltop. I’m thrilled that, even during this time when there is no requirement to participate, we have more students playing fall sports than in previous years.”

In addition to the impressive number of fall sport athletes, there have been a number of other students utilizing the new Wellness & Fitness Center under the guidance of the Bluestreak staff. The Bluestreak staff is there to help all students with their individual workout plans, lead specialized small-group training sessions, and provide exercise science and sports training education.
