St. Luke’s Debate Team Competes at Yale Invitational
Last weekend, the St. Luke’s debate team participated in the Yale Invitational Debate Tournament. Three teams – Chris Briggs ‘24 and Sally Picon ‘24, Cal Regan ‘24 and Jackie Cecil ’24, and Adrian Antonioli ‘21 and Cate Mathews ‘21 – spent their Saturday going head-to-head against some of the best debate teams in the country in a virtual battle of rhetoric. The Yale University Invitational included 396 schools, 1,966 entries, and 1,264 judges from across 41 states.
St. Luke’s Debate Coach and Economics Teacher Ms. Meredith MacLeod shared the following about the students’ experience.
“This year, the tournament was completely virtual and brought a record number of teams to the competition. In years past, 90 to 100 teams competed at the Yale Invitational Tournament. This year, 226 teams competed. All three of the St. Luke’s teams were up against competitors who had never participated in the tournament prior to this weekend. Cate Mathews scored in the top 10% of all debaters in most speaker points, which are awarded for how well a debater presents his or her speeches. All of the teams won at least two of their rounds, and one team almost broke into the octofinals on Sunday.
Congratulations to our new debaters, who are committed to attending future tournaments, improving their debate and speaking skills, and filling the shelves with tournament hardware.”
