CFL: Lunch & Lead With TV Personality and St. Luke’s Alum John Henson ‘86

SA
At Thursday’s Lunch & Lead, St. Luke’s Upper School students had the opportunity to chat with John Henson, comedian, actor, talk show host, and a member of the St. Luke’s Class of 1986.

Best known for his roles as co-host of ABC’s Wipeout and Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship, Henson's long-standing career in the television industry includes acting, writing, hosting, and producing.

Henson spoke to the students about the importance of working hard to achieve your goals, following your passion, and mastering everything you can about your craft. In between important lessons, he had the audience laughing with his tales as a stand-up comic and his bumpy road to fame.

Henson left students with some essential words of wisdom for when they find a job that excites them, “Learn that job on a 360-degree basis. Learn how to do every single thing applicable to that job.”

He also encouraged students to pause and appreciate the moments and people who impact their lives. Reflecting on his time at St. Luke’s, Henson shared a story about St. Luke’s English teacher Mr. Stephen Flachsbart, a teacher who was very special to him. Henson remembers how Mr. Flachsbart believed in him and receiving the English Award.

“Even though my grades were not as high as other students’ grades, Mr. Flachsbart could tell that I was finding something in myself in his class. That year, I received the English Student of the Year Award. Mr. Flachbart acknowledged that other students received better scores, but no one had more passion for the subject than I did. Years later, it was enormously gratifying to go back to St. Luke’s and tell Mr. Flachsbart  that he changed the course of my life.”
