Lowery Returns To Hilltop In Coaching Role
This season, St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Basketball welcomes back one of its all-time scorers Sydney Lowery ‘17 as an addition to its coaching roster. The Storm alum played three seasons for Boston College and decided to opt out of this season. She plans to continue her playing career next year.
Lowery saw this as an opportunity to return to the Hilltop to assist her former team: “When I decided to opt out of the 2020-21 season, I reached out to Mr. Ward (St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Basketball Head Coach) to see if I could help out. We had talked casually about me coming back after I graduated, but I was so happy when he said I could join his coaching staff right away.”
Lowery clocked a tremendous 2,165 career points for GVBB when she represented the Storm from eighth grade through her senior year. The 5’ 10” guard hopes to bring her wealth of knowledge and experience to help the current crop of players: “I hope the players will see that I am a tool that they can use and ask as many questions as they want about the game. I can share what I have learned as a college athlete and help those who want to play basketball at the next level. I also think I can help those who are on the fence about playing in college.”
The Trumbull native also believes this coaching opportunity will enhance her own game: “Coaching will allow me to see the game from a different perspective, especially since I will be working with a variety of girls, all who have different skill sets, personalities, and goals. I also believe watching the game from a different angle will help to elevate my own game. I hope I will be able to translate what I learn as a coach to my own play and future teammates on the court.”
Ward saw it was a no-brainer when his former player reached out to him. He looks forward to seeing the impact Lowery can have on his team: “Syd is one of the best leaders I’ve ever been around. Her work ethic, focus, and determination are second-to-none. She knows the game extremely well and has played at a level that many of our student-athletes aspire to. I can’t wait to work with her and learn from her.”
Lowery, who is thrilled to be back at her alma mater and excited to get going once in-person practices start on Wednesday, January 20, shared: “It’s amazing to be back. St. Luke’s will always have a special place in my heart. The community is so warm and welcoming. Some of my best memories are from here, where I have made lifelong friends. These are things that can never be replaced. I get chills every time I come up that hill. I know I will be welcomed with open and loving arms from a family and a place I will always call home.”
And when asked if she thinks she can beat her former coach in a one-on-one matchup, Lowery answered with no hesitation: “There is no question! Coach Ward will score one point only, and that’s me giving him an easy bucket. I am a much stronger player than I was in the 2016-17 season and always ready to lace up. Ward can name the time and place, and I am there!”
