Winter Sports Return to the Hilltop

Daniel Clarke
Upper School winter sports will begin on the Hilltop on Wednesday, Jan. 20, following Governor Ned Lamont’s announcement that the pause to team sports will not extend beyond Jan. 19.

All club and team sports, including high school sports, were put on hold when the state of Connecticut implemented the pause on Nov. 23, citing the rise in COVID-19 cases.

However, at his press conference on Monday, Jan. 11, Lamont said all youth sports can resume on Jan. 19. The ban on interstate travel and games still remains in place.

The St. Luke’s Athletic Department has implemented a number of protocols to ensure a safe return for all teams, including the wearing of masks, which will be mandatory for all participants.

At this time, teams are scheduled to practice only, but Athletic Director Mike West is hopeful that there will be some varsity level competition later in the season: “To get the news on Monday that we could have our winter teams back to work next week is fantastic. We are going to implement protocols, ensure compliance, and make determinations each week about how to progress to the next level. While I’m hopeful about contests, at this point we need to focus on taking advantage of every moment we have together, building camaraderie, developing skill, and reconditioning our student-athletes in the sports they love.”

Middle School sports are scheduled to commence on Monday, January 25.
