St. Luke’s Students Nominated as 2021 Presidential Scholars

S.A.
St. Luke’s seniors Cate Mathews and Zach Amendola were recently named candidates for the U.S. Department of Education’s Presidential Scholars Program

Each year, this program recognizes high school seniors nationwide for their outstanding accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education. Cate and Zach are among only 5,000 students – out of the 3.7 million students expected to graduate this year –  who qualified as candidates for this prestigious program. Students must perform exceptionally well on the College Board SAT or ACT exams or receive a nomination from their state’s education commissioner.

“It’s truly so exciting to even be nominated for this award. I’m in the company of so many fantastic kids. Although it’s a long shot that I’ll win, I’m ready to get working on the application, and I’m glad I have the full force of the St Luke’s College Counseling Office and faculty to help me along the way.”

Later this year, the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars will review the candidates and select one male and one female from each state to be named a 2021 Presidential Scholar. Selections are based on students’ academic success, artistic and technical excellence, essays, school evaluations, and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.

"I was thrilled to know that I had been selected to apply. As I begin the process of filling out my application, I know my chances of becoming a finalist are slim, but I am excited to see what happens."

Congratulations, Cate and Zach!
