Winter Sports Set To Compete

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s winter sports teams are scheduled to start interscholastic competition on Thursday, Feb. 11, after successfully moving through the return to play protocols during the last three weeks.

With COVID-19 cases trending downward and following the guidance from the Department of Public Health, the Storm has scheduled controlled contests for varsity teams with member schools across the Fairchester Athletic Association.

Storm hockey starts off things when they face Greenwich Country Day School at Chelsea Piers CT at 4pm. Boys basketball travels to Hamden Hall for a 5pm tipoff, and girls basketball hosts the Hornets at 6:30pm.

The student-athletes are eager to play and look forward to representing the Storm. Hockey captain Hayden Critchell ‘21 said: “I am extremely excited to play with my teammates again before I graduate. We have a great group of guys this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing how we play as a team.”

Boys basketball captain Lewis Cropper echoed Critchell’s excitement but knows Hamden Hall will provide his team with a stern test: “I'm ecstatic to finally get back on the court with my teammates. All the time that I spent away from the game gave me a new sense of appreciation for each practice and workout. I'm so grateful that we were able to get some games on our schedule. Hamden Hall has a talented roster and a really strong program. I know they will bring a high level of intensity, and we have to be ready to match that for the entire game.”

St. Luke’s girls basketball newcomer Mackenzie Nelson ’23 can’t wait to make her first appearance for the Storm: “I am beyond excited to start playing for St. Luke’s. Words can not express how good the feeling is to finally get to play in an actual game. As a team, we want to achieve so much, and we are working hard to accomplish our goals.”

All six teams will be in action the following week with contests scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 20. The Storm ski team will not compete this season as the Connecticut Department of Health recommended against any multi-school sporting events.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, no spectators are allowed at any of the contest
locations this season. As a result, the St. Luke’s Athletic Department is working with its peer schools to livestream as many of the events as possible.

You can see the full list of varsity contests on the Athletics Calendar or by sport via Team Pages
