Winter Storm Packs Punch

It was a busy week for the St. Luke’s varsity winter sports with all teams in competitive action twice.

Saturday, Feb. 20, saw girls basketball kick off a busy day for the Storm when they hosted Cheshire Academy inside Carey Gymnasium at 11am. GVBB followed that contest with a road trip to FAA rival Hamden Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

In two excellent games, Caroline Lau ‘22, Mackenzie Nelson ‘23, and Ava Sollenne ‘23 continued to impress with Lau averaging 22 points and eight rebounds, Nelson averaging 17 points and six assists, and Sollenne averaging 13 points and six rebounds. Kiera Williams ‘22 and Aidan Panian ‘23 also put in outstanding performances for the Storm.

Girls basketball is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 27, hosting Kingswood Oxford School, and on Wednesday, March 3, when they host Sacred Heart School.

Girls varsity squash played an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Feb. 20, before hosting Greenwich High School on Thursday, Feb. 25. The intrasquad matches were a great way to prepare for the Cardinals, and Olivia Jones was a standout for the Storm. Caitlin Neafsey and Caroline Pellegrino produced two great performances against Greenwich in highly competitive matchups.

Girls squash takes to the courts again on Saturday, Feb. 27, with another home contest against Kingswood Oxford School, before they travel to Sacred Heart on Wednesday, March 3.

Boys varsity basketball was at home for both its contests, hosting King School on Saturday, Feb. 20, and the Hamden Hornets on Wednesday, Feb. 24. In two extremely well-matched games, captains Cole Bryant ‘21, Lewis Cropper ‘21, and Des Pratt ‘21 led the way for the Storm. Bryant led the scoring against the Hornets with 17 points, Cropper had a double-double, and Pratt provided his usual energy on defense.

Justin Covington also had an excellent outing for the Storm and Aren Cummings ‘22 continued his strong start to his St. Luke’s Basketball career.

Boys basketball is on the road on Saturday, Feb. 27, at Kingswood Oxford School and on Wednesday, March 3, at South Kent. 

Boys varsity squash hosted local FAA rival King School for its first match of the year on Saturday, Feb. 20, before a quick turnaround to face New Canaan High School on Monday, Feb. 22. Andrew Seale ‘23 played some great squash in two matches against the NC Rams. Zach Amendola ‘21 also produced some excellent squash in his matches this week.

Boys squash has another home match against Kingswood Oxford School on Saturday, Feb. 27. BVS will then celebrate its group of seniors on Monday, March 1.

The Storm hockey team was the final team to play on Saturday, Feb. 20, as the puck squad traveled to South Windsor to face Kingswood Oxford. The team was back on home ice on Wednesday, Feb. 24, against Hamden Hall. Matthew Dellarusso ‘23 produced two fantastic displays in goal for the Storm with 46 saves across both contests. Jack Dolan notched his first career goal for the Storm, and George Foster ‘23, Henry Robb ‘22, and Dominic Powilatis ‘22 continued to impress with solid displays.

The St. Luke’s Storm will celebrate their seniors on Friday, Feb. 26, at Sono Ice House, before completing its season with two road games next week. The team faces King School on Monday, March 1, and Wooster School on Wednesday, March 3.
