CGL Conversations: Digging Deeper into Students’ Perspectives on Social Media and Technology

S.A.
Last week, St. Luke’s Middle School and Upper School students participated in the Community Goals for Learning (CGL) conversations, continuing their dialogue on the impact of technology. Beth Yavenditti, St. Luke’s Director of Global Education, shares details about these important discussions.

Leading up to the CGL, Upper School students were asked to watch the documentary The Social Dilemma. Parents were encouraged to watch it with them  — creating an opportunity to continue the conversation at home. During the CGL, students reflected on the impact of technology and social media and the role they play in their lives. The film raised questions about the downside of social media and our engagement with technology. Students discussed whether social media posed an existential threat to humanity, as the film suggested, or if social media could be a force for good. They also talked about their personal experiences using technology and social media and the impact that those habits have on them.

Middle School students took a different approach to the conversations on technology. Students were asked to think about the identities they project online or in different spaces in their lives, and consider how what they see and share impacts themselves and others. This led to conversations around fitting in and belonging in different places. The experience culminated in a project where students created a piece of art using clay or other materials to reflect an aspect of their identity that they wanted to share with the St. Luke’s community.
