The Wait Is Over

Daniel Clarke
The long wait to see St. Luke’s spring sports teams in action is almost over.

The last time a spring sport had an interscholastic contest was on Monday, May 20, 2019, when the St. Luke’s Golf Team won its fourth straight FAA Championship.

It will be 693 days between that date and when five of our seven varsity spring teams are in action on Saturday, April 10, with all sports scheduled to face Greenwich Country Day School.

Boys lacrosse starts an action-packed day at 10am when it hosts the Tigers at Pedrick Stadium. Girls lacrosse makes the trip to Greenwich for an 11am face-off with Boys tennis also on the road at 1pm. Girls tennis is at home with matches starting at 1pm followed by the final event of the day when softball hosts GCDS on the Class of 2018 Field at 2pm.

Boys lacrosse senior Austin Andersen is pumped to finally be able to play for the Storm. For various reasons, including the cancellation of the 2020 season, this will be Andersen’s first time suiting up for BVL: “I’m really looking forward to this lacrosse season, because I haven’t been able to play the last three years. I think we have a solid group of guys who are excited to compete and get better every day. Getting to play games with them will be awesome.”

St. Luke’s golf co-captain Blake Haden hopes the team can make it five in a row. St Luke’s opens up its season on Monday, April 12 against King School at Sterling Farms Golf Club and Haden expressed his desire to get going: “I’m super excited for this golf season and to defend our title. We have a lot of young, talented players that didn’t get to play last year and are eager to prove themselves on the course. I think it’s going to be a team that will have fun but stay focused and win matches.”

Haden’s fellow captain Jack Fitzgibbon added: “We have a really deep lineup this year and I am excited to see us get out there and win some matches. With all of the new young stars on the team and plenty of returning players I think we should be challenging for honors again this season.”

The St. Luke’s softball team completed a remarkable season in 2019 by winning the Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) Tournament title and the Western New England Preparatory Schools Association (WNEPSA) Class C Championship. Aidan Panian ‘23 wasn’t a part of that team but hopes to add to the success of the program: “I am super excited for the season and eager to be back on the field to finally get the chance to play some games with this varsity team. Due to the cancellation last year, I didn't have the opportunity to get to know the other players as well as I would have liked to. I look forward to playing with our two captains Lili (Messina ‘22) and Andrea (DiTeodoro ‘22) and experiencing the FAA season with the rest of the girls."

Each of our opponents on the spring schedule will have their own set of spectator rules and guidelines. St. Luke’s will allow two spectators per student-athlete on the Hilltop for Saturday games. Spectators must wear masks at all times and remain physically distanced from other spectators who are not part of their household. Unfortunately, no spectators will be allowed for midweek contests, but the St. Luke’s athletic department will work diligently to livestream as many of the events as possible.

Follow us on social media for updates to the livestream events.
