Boys Varsity Lacrosse: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Boys Lacrosse Team heads into another season full of optimism and determination, fueled by a burning desire to make up for the lost time of the previous year.

Head Coach Andy Towers returns for his fifth season and is eager to see what this group of players can achieve. The Connecticut lacrosse Hall of Famer, who is also the head coach of Premier League Lacrosse powerhouse Chaos Lacrosse Club, was philosophical when asked about the return to play: “I think everyone is happy and relieved that we are getting some sense of normalcy back. If this past year has taught us anything, it is that nothing is guaranteed and you have to value every opportunity that you get in life.”

The team has been working hard during the last few weeks in preparation for its first game of the season against Greenwich Country Day School on Saturday, April 10. Towers is committed to improving each and every day: “During the last three weeks, we have been doing a ton of skill-set development, working on the fundamentals of stick handling, ground ball play, and shooting. I want us to be mindful of what we can control, on and off the field.. Our focus, effort, toughness and competitiveness are key. If we get all these elements right, we will be at our best and the wins will fall into place.”

This year’s squad is captained by Jusin Pearl ‘21 and Hayden Critchell ‘21. Towers is thrilled with the leadership they have shown so far: “They continue to lead by example and have taken ownership for the program in general. They have set the tone with how hard they work and are committed to the team’s success. The rest of the players have seen that and follow in their footsteps.”

Another senior, who, for various reasons, will be playing his first St. Luke’s varsity lacrosse season is Austin Andersen, and Towers is convinced he will be an influential player for the Storm: “Austin is, arguably, the best athlete in the league, and I expect he will impact our team in a very positive way. He has been a part of the group for four years, so it’ll be great to finally have him on the field.”

Another player who impressed the head coach is sophomore Roderick Olson: “Olsen has come in and done a very good job. He has stood out as a kid at the high-end athletically and will be a great addition to our team.”

Critchell has also been pleased with the attitude of the group and is thrilled to be back on the field: “I'm super excited to finally play again after an unexpected year off. I look forward to getting to know the younger guys on the team, who will be the future of St. Luke's lacrosse, and to see everyone continue to put in maximum effort. If the team gives 110%, I don't care about the result. I only care that every guy on the roster is playing their heart out to the best of their abilities.”

The Storm hosts the Tigers at 10am before another home game against Greens Farms Academy on Wednesday, April 14.
