Storm Weekly Roundup

Daniel Clarke
Another exciting week of athletics got underway on Friday, April 30, with two of our girls’ teams on the road.

St. Luke’s softball made the trip to Harvey School for a non-league contest, beating the Cavaliers 14-1 on the back of a Alex Bacher ‘24 no-hitter. Bacher was back on the mound on Thursday, May 6, in a huge FAA matchup against local Rivals King School. The freshman put in another outstanding performance in 1-0 victory for the Storm. Aurora Levesque ‘24 drove in the only run of the game to improve St. Luke’s standings to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in FAA league play.

Girls varsity lacrosse was also in action on Friday, April 30, at Wooster School. The Storm offensive was firing on all cylinders in a 21-4 win against the Generals. Ryan Weil ‘21 led the team with six goals, closely followed by Lily Magliancano ‘24 with five goals and Sarah Beran with four. The Storm made it three wins in a row on Wednesday, May 5, with a comprehensive 16-5 win over King School. Weil again led the scoring with six goals, and co-captain Annalise Correia ‘22 scored four goals on four shots in an extremely impressive performance.

Girls varsity tennis suffered its first loss of the season in a heartbreaker at Greenwich Academy on Saturday, May 1. The Storm won three of the four singles matches but lost the number two singles match in a third set tiebreaker and all three doubles matches. The number three doubles match also went the Gators’ way in a third set tiebreaker in a narrow 3-4 defeat. The Storm bounced back and celebrated its seniors in style on Thursday, May 6, with a 6-1 victory over King School. St. Luke’s dropped the number one singles match but won all the remaining contests to improve to 5-1 for the season.

Boys varsity tennis was also in action on Saturday, May 1, at Hamden Hall. The squad was in fine form and improved to 2-2 for the season with a 6-1 victory over the Hornets. The Storm was back on the court on Thursday, May 6, making the short trip to King School. Finn Hublitz '21 and Phillip Etergino '23 won a thrilling contest in the number two doubles match winning a third set tiebreaker 11-9. Unfortunately for the Storm, that was the only match they did win against a very talented Vikings squad. Zach Amendola ‘21, playing the number one singles, showed maturity and grit on the court, fighting hard and demonstrating his considerable talents, despite eventually losing his match.

Varsity baseball continued its winning ways with two more victories this week to move to 8-1 on the season and 3-0 in FAA league play. The Storm traveled to Harvey School on Saturday, May 1, and recorded an impressive 15-2 win against the Cavaliers. The team followed up with a huge win against FAA rivals King School on Thursday, May 6. Ryan Higgins had another excellent day on the mound, pitching six scoreless innings and striking out 12. On offense, Ethan Righter ‘24 had three on four at bats, and Lewis Cropper ‘21 had two hits including a triple and a RBI.

The varsity golf team had a mixed week beating Greens Farms Academy on Monday, May 3, before losing to an excellent Brunswick team on Thursday, May 6. The Storm hopes to rebound as it travels to the New England Preparatory School Tournament at Bulls Bridge on Saturday, May 8.
