Virtual Poetry Reading with Frank Henson '74

S. Veneruso
Former St. Luke’s teacher and alumnus Frank "Bubba" Henson ’74 will be part of a free virtual poetry reading for an independent bookstore, Bookstore1, in Sarasota, FL., on Sunday, May 16, at 2 p.m. EST.

Bubba taught 7th and 8th grade English at St. Luke’s from 2008 to 2019, and he taught a Poetry Elective to seniors for several years. He has an M.F.A. in Creative Writing in Poetry from Columbia University.

“I was inextricably captured by poetry the first time I heard a teacher read “The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot as a sophomore in high school. There was a tone and voice there that spoke to me of secrets that I instinctively knew, but couldn’t articulate. Eliot had me from the first line, with his invitation, “Let us go then, you and I…” When I taught at St. Luke’s, I made it a mission to help students hear that poetic voice – really, more of a wavelength. Poetry is an intense way of looking at the world. There are plenty of 8th grade alumni who will recall having to memorize a poem to recite for our 8th grade class as a way of preparing for the Declamations.”

One of Bubba’s Meditations on poetry can be found here: Frank Bubba Henson '74 Meditation -- I Lead a Poetic Life

Since retiring from St. Luke’s in 2019, Bubba moved to Sarasota, FL., where he spends time hiking, biking, and writing.
