Storm Finishes Third at New England Prep Tourney

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Golf Team finished third at the New England Preparatory Golf Championship on Saturday, May 8, at the The Club at River Oaks in Sherman, Connecticut.

The Storm came in third behind Brunswick School and Avon Old Farms School on an exceptionally challenging course. Eoin Mueller ’23 low scored for St. Luke’s with a +8 round of 79. The sophomore finished two strokes behind first place and tied fifth overall.

Senior Captain Jack Fitzgibbon ‘21 shot a +10 round of 81 to finish tied for eighth overall, commenting that the course was one of the most demanding he has ever played in his career. The golfers also had to combat difficult weather conditions, making for an even tougher round of golf: “The course was set up to be extremely challenging. It was very tricky with some tight holes and tucked pins, which were accentuated by the cold and wet conditions. I think the weather alone added a few strokes to everyone’s score, but it was a great test.”

Ben Loomis ‘22 agreed with Fitzgibbon after shooting an 82: “I think the course was definitely one of the hardest we’ve played in a high school match or tournament.  It was extremely narrow and the greens were really narrow and tough to hit.  It was also really cold and it rained the whole time which made it even harder.  I think the course would have been hard without the weather, but the conditions made it much more difficult.”

The team was back to FAA league play on Wednesday, May 12, when it traveled to Yale Golf Course to take on Hopkins School. The Storm completed a comfortable win with Loomis and Mueller low scoring with scores of 37. The match was the Storm’s final league contest of the season, and the victory improved the team to 5-2 and likely another third-place finish.

St. Luke’s golf will compete in the Hamden Hall Invitational on Monday, May 17, before its final match of the season against Brunswick School on Thursday, May 20, at the Country Club of New Canaan.
