Boys Soccer Bounces Back to Stun Saints
The St. Luke’s boys varsity soccer team put in a dominant display against the Canterbury School on Wednesday Oct. 6, with a 3-0 victory on the Class of 2015 Field.
The Storm bounced back in style after losing its last two games to Hopkins School and Kingswood Oxford School. It could have won on Wednesday by an even bigger margin had it not been for some outstanding saves from the Saints’ goalkeeper.
Nikolai Bonwetsch ‘24 opened the scoring for the home team with a smart finish, after some nifty footwork by Justin Mims ‘25. Despite a number of other great opportunities, the score remained 1-0 St. Luke’s at halftime.
In the second half, the Storm kept the pressure on Canterbury and were rewarded with a second goal. Thomas Arnold stole the ball from a Saints’ defender in the attacking third before feeding it to Bonwetsch, who showed great composure and moved the ball to Michael Riley ‘22 as the goalkeeper was diving at his feet. The senior captain made no mistakes in front of an open goal to make it 2-0.
The final goal of the game came from the penalty spot, after Riley had been fouled inside the box. Riley picked himself up and coolly converted the opportunity, slotting the ball into the bottom right-hand corner for his second and St. Luke’s third goal of the game.
Head Coach Ryan Fairhurst was pleased with how his team responded to the recent losses: “It was good to get back to winning ways after a tough week. The boys did an excellent job when in possession of the ball and created a lot of opportunities. We could have scored a few more, but overall it was a great display.”
Next Up: St. Luke’s boys varsity soccer is in action on Friday, Oct. 8, against Greenwich Country Day School, before a trip to South Kent School on Monday, Oct. 11. The Storm is back at home on Wednesday, Oct. 13, against Hamden Hall.
