St. Luke’s Debaters Place in Duke Invitational

Meredith MacLeod, St. Luke's Debate Coach
Last weekend, Samantha Gerber ‘25 and Dash Gilrain-Lennon ‘25 competed virtually at the Duke University Debate Invitational, a Tournament of Champions qualifying contest. More than 400 students from over 20 states and three countries participated in the tournament, with 50 students competing in the public forum novice division. This is the first time St. Luke's has attended this prestigious invitational.

The debates started on Friday evening, with Samantha and Dash, St. Luke’s novice public forum debate team, winning their preliminary rounds. On Saturday, they debated and won another three rounds. In the quarterfinals match, a panel of judges voted 2-1 in favor of  Horizons Secondary School from British Columbia, Canada, the opposing team that advanced to the semi-final round. Samantha and Dash placed 6th overall for the team competition, with Dash Gilrain-Lennon placing 9th overall for best speaker and Samantha Gerber placing 2nd overall for best speaker.
