GVS Tame Bears To Remain Unbeaten

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Soccer Team produced arguably its best performance of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 20, to beat The Berkshire School 1-0 on the Class of 2015 Field.

The Storm started brightly against a talented Bears team and created a number of good goal-scoring opportunities in the first half. However, SLS was unable to capitalize on those opportunities, so the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

In an entertaining game, Berkshire came out strong after the break, putting pressure on St. Luke’s. GVS weathered the early storm and caught the Bears on the break to take the lead eight minutes into the second period. Lena Olbrys ‘25 received a throw-in from Aidan Panian ‘23, beat a couple of Berkshire defenders, and delivered a perfect cross for Caroline Lau ‘22 to finish from close range.

The Bears continued to pressure the St. Luke’s defense but couldn’t find a way past a resolute back line of Elli O’Meara ‘22, Emma Sherter ‘25, Natalie Owsley ‘24, Panian, and senior goalkeeper Ashley Barton. The Storm defense had stellar support from midfielders Ali Gall ‘22 and Layla Magnusen ‘22, as well as Cam Nelson ‘24, Sarah Lau ‘24, Mac Nelson ‘23, and Olbrys.

Head Coach Dan Clarke was proud of his team’s performance: “I think that was probably the best we have played this season. We knew we were in for a tough game against a very strong team, but we elevated the level of our play and showed what we are capable of. We have some huge games coming up. However, if we can replicate that kind of performance, we will be tough to beat.”

The win improves the Storm to 10-0-1 overall, with five regular season games remaining.

Next up for GVS is a trip to The Frederick Gunn School on Saturday, Oct. 23. The Storm then celebrates its seven seniors on Tuesday Oct. 26, when they play Greenwich Country Day School, before moving on to a huge FAA contest against Greenwich Academy on Friday, Oct. 29.
