Homecoming 2021 Recap

S. Veneruso
What a day! Homecoming 2021 was held (in person) on a sunny Saturday, Oct. 16. Alumni, current students, parents, parents of alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends all came together to celebrate St. Luke's.

The day began with the WSLX Live from the Hilltop radio broadcast. Math teacher Jeff Kress, Dan Mecca '81, Peter Bush Swanberg '73, and sound engineer Ed Butler worked hard to bring Homecoming to those who could not be there in person.

Three members of the Class of 1971 returned to the Hilltop to attend their 50th Reunion Brunch: Peter Gelissen, Gregory Perry, and Steven Wershaw. Former Assistant Head of School Guy Bailey, who taught math and geography to members of the Class of 1971 50 years ago, was in attendance, as well as Head of School Mark Davis, Director of Development Jon Jodka, Associate Director for Individual Giving Jenn Mason and Director of Alumni Relations Stefanie Veneruso.

At the Homecoming memorial service, held biennially, our community honored Headmaster Emeritus Dick Whitcomb, who passed away this past July at the age of 85, as well as those members of our community who were lost to us in recent years. Barbara, Jon, and Andrea Whitcomb attended the service with several of their family members, and Trustee Emeritus Bob Salomon '55 and Head of School Mark Davis shared memories and reflected on Mr. Whitcomb’s time as Headmaster. Mark Davis announced that St. Luke's has formally renamed the Athletic Hall of Fame in Mr. Whitcomb’s honor. The Richard M. Whitcomb Athletic Hall of Fame is a tribute to Mr. Whitcomb, his passion for athletics, and his innumerable contributions to the St. Luke's community.

Throughout the day, students and class parents raised funds and awareness for student clubs and organizations, offering fun games and tasty treats. The community also enjoyed the Food Truck Festival which featured Melt Mobile, Joe's Food Truck, and Firehouse Grill.

Trustees and Senior Gift parent co-chairs gathered to dedicate two new spaces on campus: the Class of 2020 Cardio and Training Mezzanine (located in the Fitness Center), and the Class of 2021 Welcome Center (formerly the St. Luke’s Admissions Office).

Of course, athletic contests were the focus of the day, starting with a morning Fun Run and capped off by a varsity football win against Portsmouth Abbey. St. Luke's teams had three exciting wins and two hard-fought losses.

The day culminated with the Alumni and Parents of Alumni Reception, Mark Davis's last as Head of School.
