St. Luke's Teams Storm Into NEPSAC Semifinals

Daniel Clarke
On Wednesday, Nov. 17, St. Luke’s won three of the four New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) quarterfinals they competed in, setting up an exciting final weekend of fall sports.

Boys varsity soccer won an enthralling match against Berwick Academy on penalties, after the two teams were deadlocked at 2-2. The Storm controlled most of the first 20 minutes but found themselves down 0-1, before Watson Myer ‘24 scored directly from a free kick early in the second half, making it 1-1.

Nikolai Bonwetsch ‘24 scored for SLS five minutes later to make it 2-1, but the Bulldogs tied up the game with four minutes remaining in regulation time. Neither team could find the breakthrough in overtime, so the game went to penalty kicks. Micheal Riley ‘22, Eli Brody ‘24, Javier Minuesa ‘25, Gianmarco Pirri ‘24, Harris Halloran ‘22, Myer, and Bonwetsch all scored their penalty kicks to make it 7-6 before goalie Mason Pratt ‘23 came up clutch and saved the Bulldogs’ seventh penalty kick, sending the Storm to the semifinals.

St. Luke’s travels to St. Andrew’s School on Saturday, Nov. 20, for a noon kickoff against the #1 seed. The winner will play in the championship game at Loomis Chaffee School on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 10:30am.

Girls soccer secured its place in the semifinal with a comfortable 4-0 win against Newton Country Day School. The Storm controlled the game from start to finish, scoring three first-half goals. Cam Nelson ‘25 opened the scoring before Caroline Lau ‘22 added two more. A well-coached Falcons team pushed St. Luke’s in the second half before Lena Olbrys ‘25 scored a fantastic goal with a few minutes remaining to make it 4-0.

GVS now faces Berwick Academy at 1pm on Saturday, Nov 20. The two teams will play at Suffield Academy for a place in Sunday’s final, which will take place at Deerfield Academy at 11am.

Varsity volleyball put in a dominant display in its quarterfinal matchup against local rivals Greens Farms Academy. The Storm raced into a 1-0 lead on the back of excellent serving from Catalina Hendricks ‘23 and some powerful hitting from Brielle Renwick ‘23, winning the first set 25-14. The second set went much the same way, with SLS closing it out 25-15. St. Luke’s trailed GFA 10-11 in the third set but found its form again to bounce back and complete a 3-0 win 25-22.

The Storm now faces #3 seed Cushing Academy at St. Luke’s on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 12pm. The winner will play in Sunday’s final, with time and location still to be determined.

Varsity Field Hockey’s tremendous season came to an end on Wednesday, Nov. 20 with a hard-fought 0-2 loss to Pingree School. The Storm qualified for the New England tournament for the first time in almost two decades and were narrowly outmatched by the #4 seed.

In addition, St. Luke’s cross country team had four runners qualify for the NEPSAC All-Star race on Saturday, Nov. 20, at St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Massachusetts. Brain Gall ‘23, Danny Gall ‘23, Will Drapkin ‘24, and Jessica Hausman ‘2 were all selected to take part in the races. The girls race takes place at 2pm, and the boys race is at 2:30pm.
