Boys Varsity Basketball: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
St. Luke’s boys varsity basketball team heads into the 2021-22 season eager to defend the Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) title it won in 2020. The Storm has won four of the last five FAA championships, following a modified season in 2020-21.

Back to guide the team, Tony Newsom has been impressed with his players during the preseason. “Our preseason has been great. In addition to the time we have been putting in on the court, the guys did a lot of work with the Bluestreak trainers in the fitness center. I look forward to playing a full season and watching the team grow. Every year, as the team develops its own identity, we get this opportunity to take this journey together.”

Newsom has been thrilled with the leadership of captains Aren Cummings ‘22, Sean Clemons ‘22, and Ethan Crawford ‘23: “Our captains set the tone for how we approach each day. We talk a lot about playing for each other, which starts with them. They are doing a great job, and I’m impressed with their approach so far.”

In fact, Newsom is extremely happy with his entire team, but newcomers Jared Strand ‘25 and Caden Bowling ‘24 have particularly caught his eye: “Jared and Caden have both come in and done very well. I like how hard they work in practice everyday. I'm excited about having them in the program for the next couple of years.”

The Storm had a difficult start to the season, with two tough losses to Northfield Mount Hermon School and Pomfret, before recording its first win at Greenwich Country Day School on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Newsom knows his team has a tough schedule but hopes his players can challenge for FAA and NEPSAC honors again: “We have a very challenging schedule this year, when we play a number of very good, well coached teams, but our goal is to win the FAA Regular Season Championship, FAA Tournament Championship, and the Class B New England Championship.”

The Storm will continue its quest on Saturday, Dec. 11, against Cushing Academy, at Babson College, before its home opener on Wednesday, Dec. 15, against Hopkins School.
