Girls Varsity Squash: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s girls varsity squash team welcomes many new players this season, sporting one of its largest rosters to date.

Head Coach Lucia Mathias is thrilled to have so many eager players and impressed with how quickly they are picking up the game: “Many of the players have been working extremely hard to improve. Sofia Salazar ‘25, Izzy Gaumer ‘25, Gigi McWhorter ‘25 and Sarah Beran ‘23 have really stood out. They have huge potential and are improving quickly.”

Olivia Jones ‘22 and Caitlin Neafsey ‘22 are the team captains. Mathias believes their significant experience and leadership will be instrumental to the team’s success: “I expect Olivia and Caitlin to do an amazing job this season. I need them to keep our large roster of players working together and to lead by example, on and off the court.”

With such a young squad, Mathias knows the team will face challenges but is excited to see what they can achieve: “I want our team to play with sportsmanship every time we step on the court. Although a lot of our players are new to the sport, they are working great together already. Everyone is improving at a rapid rate. I am particularly excited about our younger players, who are showing a lot of passion for the sport and have enormous potential.”

Mathias is eager for the season ahead and a return to interscholastic competition: “Given that we didn’t start play until mid-January last winter season, I am grateful to have started in mid-November this year. It’s awesome to have a competitive season and to be back on the court again. I want the team to play for themselves and always try to play their best, without worrying about the score and who is watching. I want them to have fun.”

Girls varsity squash had its home opener on Tuesday, Dec. 7, against local rival New Canaan High School. They followed up the home opener with a road game at Sacred Heart Greenwich on Wednesday, Dec. 15. The team is back in action on Friday, Jan. 7, when it makes the trip to Canterbury School.
