Perfect 10 For Girls Basketball
The St. Luke’s girls varsity basketball team (GVBB) has enjoyed a perfect 10-0 start to the season and delivered a number of impressive performances.
The Storm opened its FAA title defense with a comfortable 77-46 win at Holy Child School on Wednesday, Dec. 8, before winning its home opener against The Storm King School, 64-36, on Saturday, Dec. 12.
St. Luke’s followed up those victories with another magnificent win against AA team Hoosac School on Tuesday, Dec. 14. St. Luke’s put in a tremendous defensive effort, limiting the Owls to just 30 points, with the final score 59-30.
The Storm made it 6-0 after winning three games at the St. George’s Tournament on Friday, Dec. 17, and Saturday, Dec. 18. St. Luke’s beat the hosts 55-46 before another tough win against Beaver Country Day School 56-45. The Storm completed the sweep by winning a close contest, 60-54, against Suffield Academy.
The team had an extended break after the Rhode Island tournament when a number of contests were canceled due to COVID-19.
The Storm returned to the court on Monday, Jan. 10, hosting Greenwich Country Day School in another FAA contest, winning 81-51. Ten players scored for SLS, including 20 points each for Mackenzie Nelson ‘23 and Brielle Renwick ‘23.
GVBB was back on the hardwood the following evening when they faced Greenwich Academy and delivered another outstanding defensive performance, limiting the Gators to just 16 points. Alana Watson ‘26 scored a career-high 12 points in a 53-16 victory, with the team improving to 8-0 on the season.
St. Luke’s welcomed Storm King School back to Carey Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 14, when they dominated their AA opponent. Mackenzie Nelson led the scoring with 28 points, and Caroline Lau ‘22 added 15 in a 66-40 win.
Win number 10 came against Wilbraham & Monson Academy on Wednesday, Jan. 19, in another impressive display. The Storm completed the 77-47 victory with Caroline Lau scoring 30 points, Mackenzie Nelson adding 21, and Ava Sollene ‘23 chipping in with eight.
Head Coach Matt Ward has been extremely impressed with his team: “Our defense has been terrific and made it very difficult for our opponents. It’s a pleasure to watch and the reason we are 10-0.”
The Storm is in action again at Hopkins School on Friday, Jan. 21, in another FAA contest. GVBB follows that game with two more FAA games starting on the road at Greens Farms Academy on Monday, Jan. 24, then back at home when they face Hamden Hall on Friday, Jan. 28.
