Strong Start For Boys Squash

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s boys varsity squash team has had a terrific start to the season, winning five of its first six matches.

The Storm went 1-1 before the winter break, winning its first match of the season against Canterbury School 5-2, before suffering its only loss to Hackley School.

The team waited almost a month between matches due to cancellations or reschedules before playing – and winning – three matches in three days.

St. Luke’s traveled to Masters School (New York) on Tuesday, Jan. 11, when wins from Jack Lyons ‘24, Phillip Etergino ‘23, Will Drapkin ‘24, Holden Prymas ‘25, and Nihaal Kochar ‘24 gave the Storm a decisive 5-2 victory.

The team followed up that victory with two home wins on Wednesday, Jan. 12, and Thursday, Jan. 13, against Canterbury School (5-2) and Rye High School (7-0). Kaan Savasoglu ‘23, Peter Cioffi ‘23, Lyons, Drapkin, and Kochar won their matches against the Canterbury Saints before all seven starters went on to win their contests against the Garnets.

The Storm improved its overall record to 5-1 on Wednesday, Jan. 19, with a 5-2 victory against Greenwich High School. Cioffi, Lyons, Etergino, Drapkin, and Kochar gave St. Luke’s an impressive victory against the Cardinals.

St. Luke’s boys squash has a young roster, but Head Coach Brian Mathias has been extremely pleased with the way his team has started the season: “Whatever our young squad lacks in experience, they make up with courage and determination. They know how to win, and it has been fun to watch.”

St. Luke’s boys varsity squash is back on the courts on Friday, Jan. 21, when it hosts Greenwich Country Day School. The team has a very busy week ahead with matches on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Rye Country Day School, Thursday, Jan. 27, at home vs. Brunswick School, Friday, Jan. 28, at home vs. Westminster School from Atlanta, Georgia, and Sat. Jan 29, at home vs. CitySquash from the Bronx.
